The hill capital Kandy was the last Sri Lankan kingdom and has the distinction of being captured only by the British. While the British influence is very much apparent in its architecture and town planning, the traditional Sri Lankan culture continues to remain in practice. Kandy is also home to Sri-Lanka’s most important Buddhist temple, the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth relic of the Lord Buddha.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

Enroute to Kandy you will be visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. Enjoy the over 4,000 species of plants that are on display in these gardens which were once exclusively reserved for use by Kandyan Royalty.


Pinnawela Iperanigama OR Elephant Welfare Project OR Udawatta Kele

Depending on your interests choose one of these options for the morning.

Pinnawela Iperanigama: Visit the Pinnawela Iperanigama to get an insight into village life in the 17th and 18th Century. This model village depicts the customs, activities and roles of villagers and village life in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Elephant Welfare Project: Or if you would like to get some first hand knowledge about elephants we suggest a visit to an elephant project that works towards improving the welfare of captive elephants. Get an unique experience that will give you unparalleled insights into the world of these gentle giants and a chance to make a difference in a positive way.

Udawatta Kele: Or if you prefer to indulge your interests in nature you can opt for the tour of Udawatta Kele. This 257 acre historic forest reserve with its paved gravel pathways is ideal for a leisurely stroll. A visit in the mornings will be ideal for bird lovers as this reserve is known for its extensive avifauna. Udawatta Kele provides a holistic nature experience within an urban setting with a variety of plant species. Interesting things to see in this tour include ‘The Lover’s Walk’, ‘Marble Seat’, Iron wood forest, buddhist monasteries and caves. Be guided by your own private guide or use the detailed map at the entrance as you explore this sanctuary.


Gem Lapidary and Batik Making

Dalada Maligawa & Kandy Lake

Kandy is home to Sri-Lanka’s most important Buddhist temple, the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. Visit this temple which was built as part of the Royal Palace of Kandy in the 18th century. Take a drive around the scenic Kandy Lake including upper lake drive to get a bird’s eye view of this bustling city.

Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka which has the distinction of being the last Sri Lankan kingdom and the last British capital. This city is situated on the shore of a beautiful artificial lake and still exhibits the British influence in its architecture and city planning.

What to bring?

Light clothing suitable for tropical climate, a light bag to carry your belongings safely. When visiting religious sites and shrines avoid wearing revealing clothing as this may result in entry being denied. It is recommended that female visitors wear clothing that covers their shoulders and legs or carry a scarf or sarong that can be tied when necessary. Male visitors should preferably be attired in long shorts or trousers paired with a sleeved shirt or t-shirt.
