Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society and there is something to celebrate every month. Buddhist, Hindus, Christians and Muslims celebrate both religious and national occasions with conviction and pageantry.

Every full moon day in Sri Lanka referred to as poya — a Buddhist public holiday in which adherents attire themselves in white as they visit the temple from dawn until dusk to pray, meditate and listen to religious discourse. The 12 poya days each year are individually named and concern the life of the Buddha and Buddhism.
